An honest breakdown of which AI tools actually save time in engineering and technical design work — BOQ generation, documentation, calculations, and procurement — written from real electrical systems and procurement experience, not vendor marketing.

Most "AI tools for engineers" articles are written by tech bloggers who've never opened a BOQ or drafted a method statement in their life. This one is written by someone who spent three years in electrical systems and procurement — quotations, cost sheets, site documentation, vendor calls, all of it. Here's what actually moved the needle, and what's still just a demo video.

I'm not going to cover AutoCAD 2026's native AI features in depth, because I don't have a current subscription to actually test them — anything I said about them would be secondhand, and this piece is only about tools I've used or things I'm honestly aware of without pretending otherwise.

Every engineering project generates paperwork that isn't the engineering itself: Method Statements (the step-by-step "how we're going to do this task safely and in what sequence" document), HIRA reports (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment — a structured list of what could go wrong on site and how you're controlling for it), and permit-style forms before high-risk work starts. None of it is technically hard. All of it is time-consuming, because most of the words are boilerplate that has to be restated correctly every single time.

This is where Claude and ChatGPT genuinely earn their place. Feed in the project parameters — scope of work, site conditions, equipment involved, relevant hazards — and you get back a structured first draft: correct section headings, sensible risk categories, the right tone for a document that might get audited. That draft is maybe 70% done. It has the shape right.

The honest caveat, and it's not a small one: AI gets the structure right but has no idea what your actual site looks like. Every hazard rating, every safety control measure, every number in the document needs your technical verification before it goes anywhere near a client or a safety officer. Treat the output as a well-organized starting point that saves you the blank-page problem, not a document you can sign off on unread. I've never once sent a HIRA report out the door without going through it line by line — the time saved is in not staring at an empty template, not in skipping the review.

A Bill of Quantities is a list — materials, quantities, unit rates, totals — but building one from scratch for a real project (a CCTV installation across dozens of cameras, a switchgear panel order, a cabling job) means remembering every small line item: the cable glands, the earthing kit, the labor charge that's easy to forget until the client asks why the number changed later. This is genuinely one of the best uses of AI in engineering work right now.

Two ways I've actually used it. First, structuring a BOQ from a plain description of the job — describe the scope, get back a draft list of line items organized by category, then I go through and correct quantities and rates against actual supplier quotes. Second, and probably more valuable: using AI to cross-check an existing BOQ I've already built, asking it to flag anything commonly required for this type of job that's missing. Claude and ChatGPT are useful for a narrower but real task: verifying that you've applied a formula correctly, checking your logic on a load calculation, or converting between units without hunting down a conversion chart. Describe the setup — the load, the cable length, the derating factors you're applying — and it can walk through the calculation with you, which is a good way to catch an arithmetic slip or confirm you haven't missed a step.

The honest caveat here matters more than in most other categories: AI can get the general formula right and still miss an application-specific constraint that only your relevant IS code or standard would flag. It doesn't know your local code amendments, it doesn't know site-specific derating requirements your inspector will ask about, and it will confidently produce a plausible-looking wrong answer if you feed it an ambiguous or incomplete setup. Use it to sanity-check your own work and catch careless errors — never as the final authority on a number that goes into a real design. Cross-check against the actual standard every time.

AI for design assistance without expensive CAD software

Not everyone doing technical design work has a live AutoCAD license, and this is the category where I'd be most careful not to overclaim. AutoCAD's free web tier gives you basic 2D drafting in a browser, which is enough for simple layouts and markups even without a full desktop license. Tools like Maket.ai generate floor plan and layout options from a set of parameters — useful for exploring options quickly, not for producing a construction-ready drawing. For client-facing concept visuals rather than engineering drawings, Midjourney or DALL-E can turn a rough idea into something presentable for an early conversation.

Be clear-eyed about what these are: productivity helpers for the early, exploratory, or presentation-facing part of design work. None of them replace a licensed CAD package for drawings that actually go into construction or fabrication. AI for vendor and procurement communication

This is the category where AI has quietly saved me the most hours per week, and it doesn't get talked about much because it's unglamorous. Drafting an RFQ email to five vendors, building a comparison table once quotes come back, writing the follow-up negotiation email that pushes back on a price without burning the relationship — AI handles the first draft of all of this well, and the first draft is usually the slow part.

The other real use: feeding in a technical datasheet — a switchgear spec sheet, a cable manufacturer's document — and asking for a plain-language summary, or asking it to compare two vendors' datasheets side by side on the specs that actually matter for your job. Reading dense datasheets end to end for every vendor you're comparing adds up fast; having AI pull out the relevant numbers and flag the differences is a genuine time saver in a procurement-heavy role.
